Investigations of design trade-offs for a miniaturized patch coupler are presented. Using surrogate-assisted multi-objective optimization, a set of designs representing available compromises between the coupler bandwidth and footprint area are obtained and analyzed. Sequential domain patching is utilized as the optimization engine to maintain acceptable computational cost despite a large number of design parameters. The presented approach is illustrated using a spline-parameterized coupler operating at 5.6 GHz.
