The purpose of this study is to establish facility diagnostic references levels (FDRLs) of the most common adult computed tomography (CT) examinations performed at the University Hospital in Sharjah (UHS) and to optimize patient dose. Data from 258 adult chest, abdomen and pelvis, pelvis, calcium score, coronary angiography, and brain CT examinations were retrospectively analyzed. Dose parameters [volumetric CT dose index (CTDIvol) and dose-length product (DLP)] were collected for each examination/phase and the 75th percentile was calculated to represent DRLs. All examinations were performed using 128 multi-detector computed tomography. The proposed FDRLs for CTDIvol in mGy were 8.53 and 8.78 for chest (with and without contrast), 11.50 for abdomen and pelvis full exam (11.20 for pre-contrast, 11.58 for arterial phase, 11.53 for venous phase and 12.48 for delayed phase), 10.88 for pelvis, 2.94 for calcium scoring, 42.35 for coronary angiography, and 47.86 for brain. The corresponding FDRLs for DLP in mGy.cm were 308 and 604.5 for chest (with and without contrast), 1769 for abdomen and pelvis full exam (543.3 for pre-contrast, 464.5 for arterial phase, 585 for venous phase and 545 for delayed phase), 325 for pelvis, 45 for calcium scoring, 670 for coronary angiography, and 1034 for brain. Our results show relatively lower FDRLs for CTDIvol compared with internationally published DRLs.
