Recent analysis has demonstrated that the residual range migration effects of moving target signature smears in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery can be refocused by adapting phase gradient autofocus (PGA) methodologies so that range errors are estimated and compensated directly in the domain of the phase history data (PHD). The ability of this PHD-based autofocus to yield well-focused imagery depends critically upon the signal-to-clutter ratio (SCR) within the selected region-of-interest (ROI). The current investigation examines the dependence of the resulting focused target image quality upon the input target smear strength relative to that of the background clutter.
