Technical Considerations for Developing Risk Assessment Tools of Invasive Fish Species from Simplified Soil Leaching Models

While exotic invasive species poses a great threat to local biological communities, there is less consensus across existing risk assessment tools of alien species in terms of the context and objectives. The problems of the risk assessment tools also arise in on available data, evaluation methods, and interpretation and communication of the assessment results as well as the level of invasion risk and associated processes addressed in a qualitative manner rather than a quantitative method. In this study, we provided a comprehensive overview of past theories and research on regional soil assessment tools applied domestically and internationally for benchmarking a methodology for development of new risk assessment tools of invasive fish species. The regional soil assessment tools covered included various soil leaching models developed for the purposes of screening that prompted not only rapid assessment of the leaching potential of target compounds, but also identification of areas of contaminant concern. Our literature review suggested that the characteristics of alien species needed to be properly incorporated into the new risk assessment tool so that they played an important role in generating consistent and comparable outcomes across different geographic regions. We also reached the conclusion that the risk assessment tool of alien species should be developed based on the physical, chemical, and biological principles as well as environmental data varying across space and time to correctly address both their adverse impact on biodiversity and related ecosystem services over large areas and socio-economic benefits of eradicating alien species. Discussion on foundational concepts for the meta-model of the regional risk assessment tools is a plus in this talk.
