Water plays indispensable role in daily life of people in the Upper Thai Binh River Basin (UTBRB) of North Vietnam. The impact of climate change, expansion of agricultural business, industrial development and population growth are ever putting a pressure on the sustainability of water resources. This is highlighting that climate-water-conflict nexus should be studied in both qualitative and quantitative approaches. UTBRB is comprised of three major rivers; Cau, Thuong and Luc Nam including eight tributaries. The basin area is 12,845 km~2, covering seven administrative provinces. The UTBRB has a population of about 5 million and the population density is found to be 390 pops/km~2. The main objectives of the research are to evaluate basin water quality, and to assess water stress through estimation of water demand and water resources potential.
