The pH is a basic aerosol property that affects the formation and composition of aerosolsthrough the reaction of hydrogen ions and gas-particle partitions of semi-volatile acids and bases. Evidencefor enhanced acid – catalyzed secondary organic aerosol formation in the ambient atmosphere has beenreported in some studies. In addition, many epidemiological studies have reported adverse health outcomesassociated with strong aerosol acidity. In this work, we calculated the acidity of atmospheric aerosol particlescollected at a remote background site, Japan, for clarifying the process of aerosol acidity formation.
