The corrosion protection of aluminium alloy AA2024-T3 has been studied in NaCl with and without the addition of Ce (III) chloride. Various different exposure periods of immersion into 0.01 M NaCl, containing 0.003 M of CeCl_3 x H_20, are investigated to determine the effects of the inhibitor on the metal surface. Quantitative tests performed include electrochemical techniques, such as method of quasi - potentiostatic polarization (Tafel extrapolation) to determine corrosion rate v_(corr), linear polarization to determine polarisation resistance R_p, inhibition efficiency (η %), protective ability (γ %) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The samples were analyzed with SEM observation and EDX to evaluate and characterize the formed precipitates on the surface of aluminium samples. Cerium (III) chloride has been tested to be an effective corrosion inhibitor for AA 2024-T3 in 0.01 M NaCl solution. The formation of precipitates of cerium chloride occurred on cathodic intermetallic sites and the surface in general resulted in improved corrosion resistance.
