LiDAR Analysis over the Coso Volcanic Field, CA

In 2017, the Navy Geothermal Program Office had a LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) survey flown over the Coso Volcanic Field by McElhanney Consulting Services Ltd over an area of 224 km2. This data set was collected to be analyzed for surface lineations and potential faults, which will eventually be incorporated into a 3D quantitative geologic conceptual model. The data was analyzed at multiple scales for both smaller surface lineations and large regional lineations within ArcGIS. When comparing this newly analyzed LiDAR lineation data with existing geologic maps and faults, interesting similarities and differences are observed in strike and location. Refining a surface structural map and applying it to other Coso Volcanic field geologic, geochemical and geophysical data are the first steps toward an updated 3D geologic model for the Coso geothermal system and therefore expanding our understanding of the near field geothermal potential based on the near field structural geology.
