1. Using a rational cellulose functionalization approach, stable cationic suspensions of aminated CNCs have been generated 2. Continuous, conductive, nanocrystalline gold coatings were applied to the individually dispersed, electrostatically stabilized CNCs via decoration with 1-3 nm gold nanoparticles followed by electroless gold deposition 3. Optical analyses revealed that these core-shell nanoparticles exhibit size dependent optical extinction due to plasmon resonance 4. The NIR band possessed a peak maximum that could be tuned over a wide range of wavelengths by adjusting the gold coating thickness and CNC template length and through viscosity gradient centrifugation 5. These results demonstrate that cellulose nanomaterials can successfully be used as templates for synthesis of metallic 1-D nanomaterials.
