Automated Detection of Eye Diseases (Cataracts and Conjunctivitis)

The eye is one of the most important sensory organs in the human body. Eye disease is a common health issues around the world. Two such diseases are cataract and conjunctivitis. Cataract causes a sort of clouding on the lens leading to reduced vision and if kept untreated for long leads to permanent blindness. Conjunctivitis or pink eye is a condition where the conjunctiva of the eye is inflamed by an infection or by an allergic reaction. It can affect one or both eyes and leads to redness or discharge. Bacterial and viral conjunctivitis may be very contagious. The algorithm detect whether an eye has cataract or has conjunctivitis or is a normal eye. The proposed approach consider the features of an optical eye image such as the big ring area, small ring area of the lens, the eye ellipse and the intensity of the affected area for our computation. It takes the image of an eye as input and tells us if it is normal or has any diseases. Our proposed method to diagnose the mentioned eye diseases is based on the effective computation approach and promises great results. The algorithm has the potential to ease the strain on optometrists and ultimately the society.
