Fuel-cell (FC) powered Railway Vehicle Propulsion Systems (RVPSs) are highly recommended due to zero emission, fast refueling and high efficiency of fuel cell. High power density in particular, and high capacity factor in general are highly required in RVPSs. The dynamic and non-linear behavior of fuel cell under the load transitions make it necessary that it should be operated in a controlled way to maximize its power density and improve the capacity factor. In This paper will first investigate the dynamic behavior of FC in an application of RVPSs using a model, and then based on the dynamic behavior, a control algorithm will be applied to operate the FC in an optimized way for high power density and improved capacity factor.
