In the present study, safety assessment of advanced light water nuclear reactor has been performed using the International Project on Innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuel Cycles (INPRO) methodology. This methodology is considered to be a tool to check the nuclear energy system (NES) sustainability in seven different areas. Out of these seven areas, one of the areas is safety of nuclear reactors. The area of safety consists of four basic principles which further carry several user requirements. Under each user requirement, indicators and acceptance criteria are defined. On the basis of acceptance criteria, individual designs are declared safe if it fulfills the mentioned criteria. In the current study, advanced light water reactor AP 1000 is considered. AP1000 belong to the category of large reactors, AP 1000 is a PWR based design with enhanced passive safety features. This reactor is selected because of availability of related data in open literature. The safety assessment results show that all indicators comply well with the acceptance criteria.
