Optimal Sizing of PV, Battery Storage for Vava’u Island Distribution Network

This paper presents the development of an algorithm to determine the optimal sizing of a photovoltaic (PV) power plant with an Energy Storage System (ESS). The design is developed for the largest island of Vava'u in Tonga to make the total replacement of the existing diesel system. The proposed methods are briefly discussed and the basic equipment, such as PV panels, PV inverter, battery storage and Power Conversion System (PCS), are selected and estimated based on the current market. The paper also focuses on the voltage profile improvement of Vava'u island power distribution network by integrating a shunt capacitor with the optimal size and location. Power flow analysis in the MATLAB platform is used for this purpose.
