IEC 61850-7-4 Edition 2 (2010). of the IEC 61850 standard has begun to address one of the fundamental reasons for the slower than expected adoption of the IEC 61850 standard. While the transmission of GOOSE and Sampled Values (SV) has proven to be highly reliable, many users find it difficult to break old habits and concerns about their reliable implementation. It is now possible to supervise GOOSE and SV messages with the development of the logical nodes, namely, LGOS and LSVS at the subscriber to detect issues such as sender/receiver configuration errors. The use of these logical nodes may paved the way for new graphical tools for monitoring individual messages at the data concentrator and HMI levels during commissioning and normal operation. Building on the development of LGOS and LSVS, HMI screens are now being piloted to aid users with their concerns of GOOSE and SV message reliability.
