A new, simple, remotely-sensed index, the disaster vegetation damage index (DVDI), has been proposed to measure the vegetation/crop damage due to natural disasters. DVDI is based on measuring the difference of vegetation condition immediately before and after a natural disaster. Preliminary application of DVDI to two recent flood events has indicated that DVDI is an effective index to measure the degree of vegetation/crop damage due to natural disasters.
