Moving Object Velocity Detection Based on Motion Blur on Photos Using Gray Level

Velocity or speed is an interesting field of research. An object that moves at a certain speed will produce blur (motion blur) when taken its picture by a camera. Motion blur itself happens when the camera's shutter still open for a certain period of time which will produce an effect caused by a relative motion between the camera and the moving object. We already know that there are Active Methods such as Speed Radar and Lidar to calculate moving object's speed. However, those active methods can only be implemented manually by its user. As an alternative to Active Methods, we try to use a new approach to explore Passive Method which will use camera-only to detect moving object's speed. In this research, we use motion blur to detect a moving object's speed. We use the image's gray level to obtain the length of motion blur, and then analyze the moving object's speed with a pinhole model. The experiments were done in our specifically designed prototype. From the experiments results, that motion blur can be used as a parameter to detect a moving object's speed from a picture with an estimated margin of errors by 6.94%.
