In this paper, the electrostatic field between two parallel cylindrical conductors with different cross-sections, at known voltage difference, has been theoretically studied, in order to obtain analytical expressions for the electric potential and the electric field strength at any point in the space surrounding these conductors. By assuming conductors of infinite length, a problem with longitudinal symmetry is introduced. It is shown that this problem can be effectively treated in two dimensions by applying the method of image charges. The resulting analytic formulas can be applied in various high voltage applications, where the electric field stress is a key parameter.
