In this article, the research of the global network's characteristics is discussed. The main measured characteristic is a distance (number of relays) between two network nodes. The method of building the set of IP-addresses in the global network for measurement is given. And the method of measurement with GNU/Linux utilities: traceroute, sed, awk, wc. The results are processed in GNU Octave. The distributions are presented in form of plots, and their characteristics are presented in tables. The characteristics have widely spaced distributions, but their skewness and kurtosis and always much larger than 0 and 3, and this is proven with probability 0.99 with directed tests of skewness and kurtosis. It is also has been found that measured distribution is changed over time with the relevance of 0.05.
