Having reached record temperatures <90K in Yb:YLF, cryogenic optical refrigeration of an arbitrary load has been demonstrated for the first time. In parallel, research on radiation-balanced-lasers has led to demonstration of athermal rare-earth-doped thin-disk lasers.
