This paper presents a novel approach to investigate the mechanism of progressivefailure of fiber reinforced polymer composite (FRP) using a 3D model based onDiscrete Element Method. The elasticity of this model has been validated by classiclaminate theory and Finite Element Method with a very good agreement for lamina,cross-ply laminate and angle-ply laminate. Thereafter, the Tasi-Hill failure criterion isadopted in the model for predicting progressive failure of cross-ply laminates undertension. The progressive behavior of failure could be captured by the model and in thefuture the crack density of the failure obtained from the model will be validated by theexperimental data.
