This paper presents the results of breaking wave force calculationsperformed on cylindrical jack-up legs near a steeply inclined seabedusing CFD. The effect of deep water regular waves approaching thelegs was studied. The breaking wave forces were calculated using twoapproaches. By using three-dimensional CFD calculations and byapplying the Morison equation and using the wave kinematics at the leglocations derived from two-dimensional CFD calculations.Subsequently the results from the two approaches were compared. Inorder to ensure reliable results and validate the CFD model for breakingwaves, benchmark study calculations were performed for the plungingbreaking wave on a single vertical cylinder and the results werecompared to the experimental results from experiments carried out inthe Large Wave Flume (GWK) of the Coastal Research center inHannover, Germany. The CFD results were found to be in goodagreement with the published experimental results and provide valuableinsights into the physics of breaking waves on the cylindrical jack-uplegs.
