To provide basic design parameter for the road concrete volume mix design method, a hierarchical design model was constructed on the foundation of the absolute volume design model and the concept of mortar volume component (V_m) was raised. The empirical value ranges and experimental correction method for calculating V_m were given respectively. Thus, the hierarchical concrete volume mix design method of road concrete based on the V_m was put forward. The results indicated: as a basic design parameter of the hierarchical volume design method, the V_m was not the simple addition of the unit volume ratio of the cement, sand, and water. It needs to use experiential correction method on the experience value ranges after considering the requirements of the fluidity, strength, and durability under different conditions.
