Tunneling/underground projects are widely recognized to involve significant geotechnical risks. A number of factors contribute to the risk profile of these projects but probably the most significant factors are the uncertainty associated with geotechnical conditions and a clear understanding of how those conditions will influence the construction work. A proactive risk management process is critical for these difficult projects and identifying the key geotechnical risks is an important first step. There are numerous benefits of a comprehensive geotechnical risk assessment: applicable risks are more easily defined; it is less likely that key risks will be missed; and ability to develop more effective risk mitigation strategies.
