Seismic Risk Evaluation with Specific Direction for Natural Slopes over a Wide Area

The Arias intensity (I_A) is the most comprehensive parameter for expressing the energy content of earthquake ground motion records. However, the predominant direction of the slope failure cannot be evaluated using Ia because the value of Ia does not depend on the direction of motion. The paper describes a method of regional landslide susceptibility maps with permanent seismic displacement obtained from the Newmark method including a strong-motion accelerogram with a corresponding slope azimuth. To validate the proposed method, the created regional landslide susceptibility map was compared to the landslide inventory map from the 2004 Mid-Niigata Prefecture earthquake. The proposed regional landslide susceptibility map could be useful for early understanding of slope failure locations, for estimating the magnitude of damage, for planning first investigations after earthquakes, and for preventing secondary disasters immediately after earthquakes.
