Assessing students' e-learning competencies in online learning environment

Many universities offer courses supplemented with online activities. Little attention, however, was given to assessing students' preparedness to engage in online learning. This study aims to investigate students' e-learning competencies. Online collaborative learning requires skills and attitudes of its own compared with face-to-face. The study was conducted at the Linear Algebra Course, Faculty of Computer Science, Universitas Indonesia. Fifty-six freshmen students in the second semester participate in the study. Three sources of data were used, including questionnaires, discussion transcripts, and in-depth survey. The results indicate that the students have a good technological competency, have moderate competency in interaction with learning content, and lack of interaction skills with their learning community. A recommendation to improve students' preparedness in online collaborative learning is presented.
