Characteristics improvement of claw-pole alternators by reducing armature reaction

A novel rotor design of claw-pole alternator is proposed from both results of experiments and calculations. First, the magnetic field in conventional machine is calculated by 3-D finite element analysis. In this analysis, the total flux in the machine is decomposed into those produced by field and armature currents to understand the factors that prevent increase in maximum output. From these results, a novel rotor design is proposed in order to increase the maximum output and efficiency of the claw pole alternator. Finally, the experimental verification is carried out by using the prototype machines. It is clarified that large armature reaction is one of the major factor that limits the performance of the claw-pole alternators. The characteristics improvement by the proposed machine, in which the armature reaction is reduced, is confirmed by both the 3-D finite element analysis and the experiments.
