In this paper, we identify critical technical issues relevant to the classification of piping systems. Specifically, we address how flash point, boiling point, and autoignition temperature affect API pipe classifications. We identify some nuances in properly identifying pipe class and suggest ways to ensure that pipe class is appropriately assigned as operating temperatures and compositions change over the life of the asset.
