A simple design method to calculate longitudinal strain demands in compression and tension is presented in this paper. The strain demands are required to withstand temporary ground deformation induced by an earthquake or permanent ground deformation observed along a slope. Design formulas were derived to calculate the elastic stress and strain induced in a pipeline assuming an elastic pipe and bilinear soil springs. An approximate method is proposed to obtain the inelastic strain using the elastic solution and the tensile properties. The max inelastic strain is consistent with the strain demands in compression and tension.
