A/SA 553 Type III (Quenched and Tempered 7 Nickel) Steel Plates Capabilities Dedicated to Liquefied Hydrocarbons Storage Tanks and Transportation Vessels Fabrication

The 7% nickel quenched and tempered steel (A/SA 553 type III) has been developed by Industeel in response to the market demands for leaner Ni solution to help customers to save investment costs. The developed quenched and tempered 7% nickel steel, branded CryElso™ 7, provides an excellent strength and toughness, associated to a very good ability to arrest brittle cracks down to LNG service temperatures, leading to performances equivalent to conventional 9% nickel quenched and tempered steel, thanks to steelmaking process optimisation. Its weldability is also comparable to that of 9% nickel steel, using the same welding technologies and consumables. This alloys is devoted to the construction of LNG storage tanks, transportation vessels and ships using LNG as their engine fuel, as wells as for their liquefied ethylene and ethane storage needs. This paper aims at assessing some key properties of the 7% nickel steel plates and its weld joints essential to ensure the safe operations of LNG, and other liquefied hydrocarbons (e.g., ethane, ethylene, petrochemical feedstocks) storage tanks in brittle crack arrest properties.
