The New Mercedes-Benz Diesel Engine OM 654 -An Integrated Technical Concept to Meet Future Stringent Emission Limits

The 2.0 liter 4-cylinder diesel engine OM 654 is the first member of a completely new diesel engine family of Mercedes-Benz. This paper describes the technical concept, the product design and the innovations of the OM 654 with a focus on combustion, performance engineering and exhaust aftertreatment. Beside low CO2 emission and fuel consumption the compliance to future emission limits (RDE, WLTP) was a key requirement for the engine family. This leads to the chosen concept with a highly integrated multiway-EGR system as well as with an engine mounted exhaust gas aftertreatment system with low temperature losses featuring particulate filtration and AdBlue-SCR. Finally the performance data and onroad emission data achieved with the new E-class is presented.
