UPDATE ON FAST BRIDGE RESEARCH AND TESTING INCLUDING DAMAGE AND REPAIRS FROM MAY 2016 DERAILMENT

2017 marks the 20th anniversary of the first research bridge installed at the Facility for Accelerated Service Testing (FAST). This paper provides an overview and summary of past testing, as well as an update based on recent changes and new research focus areas for the three research bridges. Specific items addressed include: 1. Description of the heavy axle load train and operations at FAST 2. Changes in configurations of the three bridges over the years 3. Bridge testing history and major research topics investigated at FAST over the years 4. Steel spans in place of concrete spans in one former concrete bridge 5. Damage and repairs as a result of a May 2016 derailment 6. Newly installed bridge deck and fastener test (premium rail seat plates, alternative deck fasteners, various types of deck ties) 7. Recent focus on fitness for service research to extend safe service life of older steel spans.
