In this paper, a beam broadening problem solution for SAR applications with two-dimensional active electrically scanning array (AESA) is presented. An aperture field distribution optimization problem considering observation geometry and reflection properties of the ground is formulated. A shaped pattern synthesis problem is divided in two separate problems: beam broadening in elevation and azimuth planes. In elevation plane, the problem is solved using orthogonal aperture polynomials approach and a global optimization algorithm. An active electrically scanning array with DBF in azimuth plane is considered for beam broadening. Solution for azimuth plane beam broadening, featuring small number of elements and large element spacing, is also presented.
