In this paper, the effective diameter of the shrink-fitted shaft-hub connection which is presented in ISO standard, is studied. Two modeling methods of the shrink fit connection without loading, Lame's equations method and FEA method, is discussed and the results are compared by applying to the same demonstration example. The neutral axis deflection of shrink-fitted shaft-hub with different interference values are investigate and the maximum of deflection is not sensitive to interference change in range that is interested. The effective diameter and the effective diameter ratio of shrink-fitted shaft-hub section are clearly defined. Also, the monotonic decreasing relation between the maximum of deflection and effective diameter of shrink-fitted shaft-hub are figure out. Finally, the optimized effective diameter of the section of shrink-fitted shaft-hub are solved and it is concluded that the ISO standard effective diameter From the worst design scenario, smaller effective diameter may lead to an unsafe shaft design and an inaccurate deflection evaluation.
