This paper outlines the analysis undertaken on a small fuel cell/battery vehicle model to establish an energy management strategy to achieve a minimum trip cost over a route without any prior knowledge of the drive cycle characteristics. The study was undertaken as part of the IEEE VTS Motor Vehicles Challenge 2017. Three strategies are presented based on the vehicle model specified for the challenge. The developed energy management strategies differ from the typical fuel consumption minimization strategies in that the impacts of fuel cell degradation and battery degradation are incorporated into these minimum cost strategies. The minimum trip cost, to meet the challenge requirements, is achieved by ensuring that the fuel cell is operated at an optimum cost level to provide the vehicle''s traction power while sustaining a high state of charge on the battery.
