Digital lifestyle with always-on connection to internet as well as the emergence of Internet of Things (IoT) throughout the world calls for reliable, concurrently maintainable data center and telecommunications systems. Thus, this need had pushed the limit of electrical and mechanical system, in particular power and cooling systems to provide reliable, economical and maintainable services. This requirements calls for electrical power systems that are robust and able to withstand any disturbances to the main grid power systems. This includes the ability of telecommunication providers and data center operators to provide reliable electrical backup systems which includes alternative and backup source on Alternating Current (AC) system and Direct Current (DC) system. This paper presents Telekom Malaysia (TM) approach in providing the reliable electrical power systems for TM's telecommunication system in exchanges as well as data centers. In this paper, TM's approach from designing the AC and DC systems, preventive maintenance and life cycle management of Power Related Equipment (PRE) also being presented. Besides, the paper also foresee new challenges that will be faced by TM in particular and telecommunication provider in general in facing new needs and requirements in providing reliable electrical power supply to support new digital age which is largely depends on connectivity.
