The efficient use of radio frequency spectrum is of utmost importance. Cognitive Radio aids this condition by opportunistically making use of the unused portion of the spectrum. Spectrum sensing is the fundamental function of cognitive radio in the detection of unused spectrum. Among the various mechanisms employed in spectrum sensing techniques, energy detection method is the most practically applicable algorithm. In this paper, we throw light on the implementation of wavelet packet transform in energy detection spectrum sensing to improve the detection of signals by utilizing the multi-resolution property of wavelet packets and prove that the wavelet packet transform is superior to Fast Fourier Transform (FFT).
