Test and Evaluation of Corrosion-Mitigating Covers

The Navy is investigating methods to increase the service life of exposed topside systems. Research shows that sheltering equipment from rain and salt fall can significantly decrease the corrosion rate and material loss of bare steel components. Currently the Navy accomplishes this by using fabric cover materials. Military specification materials made from vinyl reinforced fabrics have been used traditionally, but advanced technology cover materials are now commonly available. This test program evaluated various properties of cover materials to determine the benefits, if any, of the different alternative cover materials. After conducting multiple rounds of testing, it was determined that the significant factors affecting corrosion of bare steel coupons was whether or not the coupon was protected by a cover and the environment in which it was located. There was no significant difference in corrosion performance among different cover material types (except for the canvas material, which performed poorly). Inclusion of multiple layers, vapor corrosion inhibitors (VCIs) and wicking layers did not provide any benefit to controlling corrosion versus a common Navy military specification vinyl material. Based on these findings, cover materials should be chosen for the other properties they possess that will suit the required service environment. Cover material cost, ease of use, and its mechanical properties should be strongly considered.
