The purpose of the research program described in the paper is to produce a comprehensive approach to road safety training and education for road safety practitioners, which would result in more knowledgeable road safety practitioners and managers who design, implement, and evaluate countermeasures and programs to improve road safety. Safety practitioners need comprehensive educational and training programs to teach road safety fundamentals, and continuing education to ensure research results are effectively implemented. The paper addresses the background for the research program, objectives, expected outcomes, methods, and results. The research is not complete but most of the key elements have been documented, such as general consensus on education and training requirements, additional research needs, methods for attaining the resources necessary for developing the materials, etc. The paper is intended to facilitate a discussion of the research results and collect experiences, opinions, and recommendations from the Canadian Association of Road Safety Professionals (CARSP).
