摘要

The accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has demonstrated one more time that whereas the likelihood of core meltdown accidents is very low, it is imperative that the physical phenomena governing such accidents be well understood, and the experience gained from the analysis of past accidents be used both to improve the predictive capabilities of the existing computer simulation tools and to develop next generation advanced models and computer codes. The work on the development of a novel modeling framework for the analysis of phenomena governing the progression of core meltdown accidents, and model implementation in a new computer code, COMPASS, is currently underway at KAERI. Whereas the focus of the current work in on studying hypothetical core meltdown accidents in the APR1400 reactor, the overall COMPASS code is applicable to Pressurized Water Reactors in general.
