Recently, the development of Microgrids (MGs) causes challenges that need considerable attention. One of the most challenging problems which occurs when a MG is islanding or disconnecting from the main grid, since during this event frequency and voltage of MG deviate from their nominal values. Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) are used to solve this problem. In this paper, Flywheel Energy Storage System (FESS) is used in order to enhance the frequency and voltage of the MG. For determining the optimal power capacity of FESS an Objective Function, based on frequency deviation and investment cost of FESS, is exploited, using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). Simulation results which have been carried out by MATLAB/Simulink, show the improvement by optimal capacity of FESS.
