This paper provides a direct-drive electromagnetic active suspension system which consists of a double- stator air-core tubular permanent magnet linear motor (DATPLM) in parallel with a coil spring. The topology of magnetic pole can be radial-magnetized, axial- magnetized and Halbach-magnetized. The proposed DATPLM can operate in both motor mode and generator mode which allows for bidirectional energy flow. Therefore, the suspension system can simultaneously eliminate the road disturbances and apply active roll and pitch control. Compared with the available slotted topologies, the proposed quasi-Halbach magnetized topology has excellent dynamic response, servo characteristics and very low force ripple.
