Technology for high dynamic range imaging (HDRI) has advanced rapidly in recent years, and the use of HDRI within the lighting industry has also grown significantly. HDRI holds great promise as a means to collect a large number of luminance measurements in a much shorter time and at much lower cost than is possible using traditional luminance meters. This expanded use of HDRI is shown in the technical literature, with a growing number of researchers and practitioners reporting luminance measurements that were captured through HDRI techniques. Published papers using HDRI address topics such as daylighting distribution in buildings, discomfort glare from electric light sources, preference judgments in offices, glare from windows, photogrammetry for lighting quality assessments, and photometry.
