SEAOSC Design Guide: City of Los Angeles Mandatory Earthquake Hazard Reduction for Wood Buildings with Soft, Weak, or Open-Font Wall Lines

The SEAOSC Existing Buildings Committee developed a design guide to demonstrate the basic steps in seismically strengthening an existing wood frame building subject to the Los Angeles ordinance, titled "Mandatory Earthquake Hazard Reduction in Existing Wood-Frame Buildings with Soft, Weak, or Open-Font Walls." The guide includes a discussion of key aspects of the ordinance, including the timeline, scope, and responsibilities of the design professional. Also provided are practical considerations that provide design professionals insight into how to avoid and overcome design and constructability challenges. The guide includes an example to demonstrate the basic steps for designing the strengthening of a typical building with an Open-Front wall line. The design example uses the Ordinance prescriptive criteria and compares it to the FEMA P-807 design criteria.
