A 1GHz Wilkinson power divider utilizing phase shifted transmission line sections to replace the quarter lambda sections is presented. The phase shifted transmission line section are composed of several high impedance and low impedance transmission lines to mimic conventional π-type lumped inductor (L) capacitor (C) phase shifters. A rectangular-shape Defected Ground Structure (DGS) is used to implement the high impedance transmission line in order to avoid impractical physical line width. The phase shifted transmission line section can be formed by an odd number N of transmission line segments to synthesize different orders of π-type phase shifter. The physical length of the phase shifted transmission line measured from the fabricated Wilkinson power divider for N=3 is approximately 20% shorter than a conventional Wilkinson power divider, resulting in a potential lower loss. The presented Wilkinson power divider can find the applications in modern compact communication systems.
