Economic feasibility and infrastructure optimization of in-motion charging of electric vehicles using wireless power transfer

The economic feasibility and infrastructure optimization of in-motion wireless power transfer (WPT) in the U.S. is evaluated using dynamic vehicle models integrated with GPS stamped real world drive cycle data. Results show total vehicle level savings greater than the WPT electric vehicle (EV) purchase price with a societal level infrastructure payback time of 11.3 years at 25% fleet penetration for deployment in the U.S. Optimizing the technology for consumer satisfaction shows that up to 99% of light duty real world drive cycles are satisfied with a 25 mile on-board electrical range utilizing 50 kW in-motion WPT. Additionally, in-motion WPT satisfies 92.6% of consumers, representing a 50% increase in the consumer satisfaction of low-range EVs.
