A Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) based low cost multimode fiber optic link is investigated for Gigabit Ethernet applications. The important feature of this work is the inclusion of temperature dependent VCSEL characteristics in the link simulation. The impact of link length and VCSEL temperature on the performance of 1.25 and 2.5 Gb/s data transmission is determined by evaluating the Quality factor (Q-factor), Bit Error Rate (BER) and Optical Signal-to-Noise Ratio (OSNR). This analysis helps to identify the optimum link distance under various operating temperatures.
