Integration of wireless power transfer (WPT) into roadways and vehicles represents a promising alternative to traditional transportation. In this study, the economic feasibility and infrastructure optimization of in-motion WPT is evaluated using dynamic vehicle models integrated with real world drive cycle data. Results show total vehicle level savings greater than the WPT EV purchase price with a societal level infrastructure payback time of 5.9 years at 10% fleet penetration for WPT deployment on interstate and urban roadways in the U.S. Limiting WPT charging to interstate systems shows 96% of light duty drive cycles are satisfied by a 25 mile on-board range.
