The new generations of PCBs are growing more and more crowded with smaller, thinner components, furthermore the demand is increasing for electronics that will withstand corrosion. This toughens the challenge of PCB protection. 3M Novec Electronic Grade Coatings constitute an innovative and sustainable solution to this demand, differentiating themselves from conformal coatings by forming a fluoropolymer layer, ultra thin (1μm) with hydrophobic and oleophobic properties, thus protecting PCBs from environmental conditions leading to corrosion. Indeed, electronics is now mobile, embedded and the industry is demanding increased reliability even in extreme conditions such as water immersion, salted water mist or corrosive gases like hydrogen sulfide, commonly found in the industry of petroleum, rubber, paper, etc. Moreover, in electronic assembly, the coating of PCB is a limitating step. These fluoropolymer coatings allow for a quick dipping application and air drying process which helps avoiding time-consuming steps such as oven-curing or masking as the electronic connections can actually be done through the coating. All in all, 3M Novec Electroic Grade Coatings can be the right protection choice against corrosion for PCBs, electromechanical (MEMS) or optronic components as they are very thin, chemically inert and stable over time, transparent, environment resistant, safe for people and respectful of the environmental regulations.
