A comparison between reflection-type (R-type) and conventional transmission-type (T-type) surface plasmon resonance based fiber-optic sensor is demonstrated experimentally. The characteristics of sensors such as resolution, sensitivity and efficiency are measured. As a result, the R-type sensor enhances SPR energy and shows better resonance efficiency about 2 times larger than the T-type sensor. The maximum SPR efficiency is measured about 45.8% at resonant wavelength 671 nm and 46.2% at 696 nm for DI water and alcohol, respectively. So, the R-type sensor shows better performance in both DI water and alcohol detection.
