Green roofs may be a kind of plant configurations, cultivated shrubs or herbs in flat roofs or platforms. It can improve the building energy efficiency, beautify the landscape, and increase the urban green space area. As cities are the main sources of carbon emissions, low carbon ecological development has become the concentrated reflection of urban sustainable blueprint around the world. Green roof is one of the elements of green building. It not only represents the current situation of low carbon buildings but also is good for low carbon city development. Nevertheless, little research has investigated the public attitudes concerning it. This paper conducted citizens' surveys on green roofs in Shenzhen, China, to obtain general attitudes toward green roofs, and to assess its ecological value. The paper also estimated people's willingness to accept carbon emissions permit trading through contingent valuation method (CVM). The questionnaire analysis showed that most citizens understood the importance of green roofs, through acknowledgement of its landscape value and ecological value. Furthermore, respondents felt that green roofs had the character of public goods. Lastly, the paper assessed the resource values of green roofs, which was about 19.14 Yuan per month. In conclusion, the research contemplations would be helpful to architects with an explicit viewpoint towards developing greener and smarter eco-cities.
